Georgia’s Raffensperger – who Trump pushed to ‘find’ votes – headlines next January 6 committee hearing

Georgian Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R), who became well known for thwarting former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the state’s 2020 election results, will testify at the committee’s upcoming hearing Jan. 6 with his deputy, Gabriel Sterling (R), according to a spokesman for the secretary of state.

Trump urged Raffensperger during a Jan. 2, 2021, call to “find” the votes to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory in Georgia, but Raffensperger pushed back, denying conspiracy theories Trump floated about rigged voting machines .

Trump appeared to threaten Raffensperger and the Secretary of State’s attorney, Ryan Germany, in an exchange during the call, warning them that ignoring his calls to void the election could be a ” criminal Offence”.

Sterling also gained national news attention by hosting press conferences in which he criticized Trump’s widespread fraud allegations.

Surprising fact

Trump’s efforts to overturn the Georgia results are the subject of a criminal investigation in Fulton County. Raffensperger testified before a special grand jury convened in the case earlier this month.

Key context

Tuesday’s public hearing, scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern Time, will be the fourth held by the committee, which has portrayed Trump as the central figure who sparked the Capitol riot. The first hearing focused on the actions of the rioters who stormed the Capitol and aired in prime time to an audience of more than 20 million viewers. The second hearing focused on Trump ignoring advisers who told him he had lost the election, while the third hearing focused on Trump’s efforts to push Pence into blocking the certification of elections.

Raffensperger easily beat Rep. Jody Hice (R), his Trump-endorsed challenger, in last month’s Republican primary for secretary of state.
