Gasoline prices hit $5 a gallon nationwide for the first time

The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the United States has reached $5 Friday night, and rising fuel costs are expected to persist through the busy summer driving season.

The record, according to OPIS, an energy data and analysis provider, comes as U.S. consumer inflation hit a 40-year high and crude oil prices remain high.
