French Open: Rohan Bopanna-Matwe Middelkoop’s campaign ends, the duo retires in the men’s double semi-final

Indian veteran tennis star Rohan Bopanna and his Dutch partner Matwe Middelkoop’s inspirational run at Roland Garros came to an end on Thursday night (June 2) as the pair pulled out with a defeat in the men’s doubles. Facing 12th seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Jean Julien Roger, the Indo-Dutch pair conceded victory 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(8).

As Bopanna reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in seven years, it was Middelkoop’s first appearance in the last four rounds of a Major. In the semi-finals, the Indo-Dutch pair got off to a winning start by wrapping up the first set, 6-4, in 36 minutes. From then on, Arevalo-Roger returned to the game by pocketing the second and penultimate set 6-3 in 40 minutes. The third and final set came in a tiebreaker where Bopanna-Middelkoop saved two match points, however, they ultimately lost the contest.

Although the result was not in their favor in the semi-finals, Bopanna-Matwe can certainly be proud of their overall campaign. The Indo-Dutch pair picked up a stunning win over British-Finnish pair Llyod Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara in the quarter-finals. Even in the pre-quarter, they had saved five match points before getting the better of second seeds Mate Pavic-Nikola Mektic.

Speaking of Bopanna, the 42-year-old Indian continues to stay relevant in the tennis fraternity with his performances and never die attitude. His determination and physical condition stand out and the veteran will be looking to continue his momentum in the next major competitions this year.
