Forces behind US Capitol attack ‘stay hard at work today’: Biden

US President Joe Biden said on Friday June 10 that the “forces” behind the attack on the US Capitol last year continue to be a threat to democracy.

“It is important for the American people to understand what really happened and to understand that the same forces that led to January 6 are still at work today,” he said. His statement came during a speech in Los Angeles, where he hosted the Summit of the Americas.

Biden’s remarks came the same day as the US congressional committee investigating the attack on Capitol Hill held an explosive public hearing. The committee accused former US President Donald Trump of an “attempted coup”.

Trump had addressed a gathering of his supporters near the US Capitol on the day of the attack.

Biden urged Americans to “protect our democracy”, arguing that the battle for the soul of the country was “far from won”.

The House Select Committee on the Insurgency is holding a month of hearings to present the initial findings of a year-long investigation into the riot, which left five people dead.
