Donald Trump orchestrated Captiol riot, inquiry committee says in open hearing

A congressional commission investigating the January Captiol riot has accused former US President Donald Trump of ‘arranging’ the siege in an ‘attempted coup’ to stay in power.

The committee argued that Trump laid the groundwork for the insurgency through months of lies about fraud in the 2020 presidential election described by his own administration as the safest ever.

In a primetime presentation of the findings of a year-long investigation – the first of six hearings scheduled this month – the special committee said on Thursday the former president was seeking to overturn the 2020 election result. won by Joe Biden by orchestrating the insurrection.

“President Trump called the crowd together, rallied the crowd, and lit the flame for this attack,” the panel’s Republican vice chairwoman Liz Cheney said in her opening remarks at the first in a series. eagerly awaited summer audiences.

Minutes earlier, Democratic committee leader Bennie Thompson had accused Trump of being “at the center of this conspiracy.”

“January 6 was the culmination of an attempted coup – a brazen attempt, as one rioter put it shortly after January 6 – to overthrow the government. The violence was no accident” , did he declare.

To get their point across, the investigative committee released a compilation of some of the most disturbing footage from the January 6 attack.

They included never-before-seen material, including birds-eye footage from security cameras that showed the huge pro-Trump crowd as it began to overrun the Capitol grounds, CNN reports.

The footage also showed how the crowd took direct inspiration from Trump, with one rioter reading out a Trump tweet over a megaphone for other rioters to hear. In that tweet, Trump slammed former Vice President Mike Pence for announcing he would not overturn the 2020 election results while presiding over the joint session of Congress to certify Joe Biden’s victory.

After that moment, the committee montage showed a now infamous clip of Trump supporters chanting “Hang Mike Pence.”
