COVID-19: Moderna Announces Positive Results for Omicron Vaccine


Moderna announced on Wednesday June 8 that a new vaccine targeting both the original coronavirus (COVID-19) and highly transmissible strains of Omicron produced a better immune response. In an official statement, the US-based biotech company announced the results of its new clinical data on the bivalent Omicron-containing Covid booster candidate, mRNA-1273.214, containing mRNA-1273 (Spikevax ) and a vaccine candidate targeting the Omicron variant.

The Omicron variant is a variant of SARS-CoV-2. This caused waves of news of Covid cases across the world. The concerning deadly variant was first reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) from South Africa on November 24, 2021.

The official statement noted that the booster dose met all pre-specified endpoints against the Omicron variant one month after administration compared to the original mRNA-1273 vaccine. The booster dose also produced a greater neutralizing antibody response.

Stéphane Bancel, CEO of Moderna, said, “We are delighted to share the preliminary analysis of mRNA-1273.214 data, which is the second demonstration of the superiority of our bivalent booster platform against variants of concern and represents a innovation in the fight against COVID.”

The vaccine was given as the fourth dose in a trial involving more than 800 people. The dose is said to have increased virus-neutralizing antibodies against Omicron eight-fold.

During the trial, all participants received three doses of Spikevax beforehand. The company said just over half of the participants received a fourth dose of the bivalent vaccine while the rest received another dose of Spikevax.

Notably, in the study, which did not measure the effectiveness of the vaccine, the booster, the vaccine generated more antibodies against the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta variants compared to the original vaccine.
