China, US defense chiefs hold talks, stand firm on Taiwan differences

The defense chiefs of China and the United States met in Singapore on Friday, and the two sides reiterated their positions on Taiwan, a major source of tension between the two powers.

Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe said the talks “went well”. A Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman later said Wei reiterated Beijing’s tough stance on Taiwan.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin called on China to “refrain from further destabilizing actions” in Taiwan, according to a US statement after the talks.
