WNBA star Brittney Griner appeared Thursday in a courtroom just outside Moscow, Russia. It was his third hearing since his detention in Russia on drug trafficking charges in February. Members of Griner’s Russian basketball club came to his defense, testifying in favor of the top American athlete. Griner’s Russian colleagues praised his character and leadership skills. a week after the 31-year-old pleaded guilty to drug charges for possessing and allegedly smuggling vape cartridges containing hash oil into the foreign country. This, as US authorities face mounting pressure to strike a deal to release Griner. His lawyers may be advising a lighter, lighter prison sentence, but Griners’ best bet for a quick release could be a prisoner swap, though Russian officials firmly maintain negotiations won’t take place until the procedure will not be completed. Despite this, some politicians, celebrities and other top athletes continue to denounce the United States’ handling of the Griners case. Los Angeles Lakers star Lebron James made a public criticism in the trailer for an upcoming episode of his show The Shop: Uninterrupted “After facing backlash himself, the NBA star clarified his comments, tweeting that he was not knocking our beautiful country. He said: “I was just saying how she probably felt emotionally, as well as so many other emotions and thoughts being inside the cage for more of 100 days. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert reiterated at All-Star Weekend in Chicago that Griner remains a priority for the league. as soon as possible,” Engelbert said. Many Griners teammates, other WNBA players and the Reverend Al Sharpton have spoken of the urgency of bringing her home. Brittney’s wife, Cherelle, said that she knew US officials faced a difficult situation, but had confidence in President Bidens’ efforts.Secretary of State Antony Blinken promised that the US government would not back down until Americans were detained in Wrong, like Griner, would not be home. Griner’s hearing continues Friday, and she is expected to make a statement and answer questions from the judges.
