Thanking British Prime Minister Boris Johnson for his “full” understanding of Kyiv’s needs, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the UK was supplying the weapons Kyiv needed to wage war with Russia.
“I am grateful to Prime Minister Boris Johnson for fully understanding our demands and for being ready to provide Ukraine with exactly the weapons it so badly needs to protect the lives of our people,” Zelensky said.
It comes after the UK defied Russian President Vladimir Putin’s warning and announced it would supply Ukraine with multiple launch rocket systems that can hit targets up to 80 km (50 miles) away.
In a crucial battle of the Kremlin offensive in Ukraine’s eastern Donbass region, Ukrainian and Russian troops are fighting street by street for control of the industrial city of Sievierodonetsk.
“Looking for ways to avert the food crisis and unblock (Ukrainian) ports,” Zelensky and Johnson had a phone conversation after Russia’s naval blockade of Ukraine due to which Kyib is unable to export most of its agricultural products.
It comes after a major rebellion within Johnson’s Conservative party over the so-called ‘partygate’ scandal dealt a blow to his authority, even though he survived a vote of no confidence in the UK.
In a move that could seriously weaken Ukraine’s position and allow the Russian military to close in on the center of the country, Zelensky also said Moscow’s forces intended to take the city of Zaporizhzhia in the southeast of the country, home to more than 700,000 people.
