Bidens evacuated from beach house after plane violates airspace

US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden have been evacuated from their beach house in Delaware after a plane violated restricted airspace near their home, the White House has announced.

The Bidens were briefly moved to a safe location, but are now back at their residence. The incident happened on Saturday.

“A small private plane has entered restricted airspace, all indications are incorrect and precautionary measures have been taken,” an official told reporters on Saturday, according to CNN.

“There was no threat against the president or his family,” the official added.

The Bidens are spending the weekend in Rehoboth Beach, in part to celebrate the first lady’s birthday, which was Friday, CNN reported.

The US Secret Service, tasked with protecting the president, said the plane mistakenly entered a secure area and was “immediately escorted out”.

Other than that, the pilot was on the wrong radio channel and “not following published flight instructions”, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

“Shortly before 1pm today, a private aircraft entered restricted airspace over Rehoboth Delaware after mistakenly entering a secure area. The aircraft was immediately escorted out of the restricted airspace “, Guglielmi said in a statement transmitted by the White House.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the pilot was not on the correct radio channel, was not following NOTAMS (Notices to Airmen) that had been filed, and was not following published flight directives. The United States Secret Service will question the pilot,” the statement added.
