Biden White House signals interest in ending some of Trump’s China tariffs

The White House on Tuesday signaled some willingness to adjust some of former President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Chinese goods.

Asked by reporters about a report by Axios that President Joe Biden is in favor of easing tariffs on certain consumer items from China, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that “certain tariffs of Trump were irresponsible and do not advance our economic or national security and instead increase costs for families and businesses.”

She said the Biden administration is “working to align these random tariffs with our priorities,” but has “nothing to share on the president’s decision at this time.”

Some economists have lobbied the Biden administration to cut tariffs to fight inflation, but a bipartisan group of nine U.S. senators sent a letter to Biden last month asking him to “substantially maintain” tariffs. tariffs on Chinese imports, arguing that the levies are “not a driver of inflation today.
