‘As important as winning a World Cup’: Shubman Gill reacts after Gujarat Titans lift 2022 IPL trophy – WATCH

Gujarat Titans (GT) created history on Sunday May 29 by beating Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 7 wickets in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) Final at Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday May 29 to win their first title of their first season. The Gujarat Titans comfortably chased the target of 131 runs with 11 spares to become only the second team after RR to win the elusive trophy in their debut season. RR had won his first IPL title in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2008.

It was a lopsided final with the Gujarat Titans dominating the proceedings from the start of the game. Skipper Hardik Pandya delivered a brilliant performance with the ball winning a three-wicket carry to help GT limit RR to a quiet 130/9 in 20 overs.

Fly-half Shubman Gill then slammed an undefeated 45 while Pandya and David Miller played crucial shots for 34 and 32 points respectively to bring GT comfortably to the line in the chase. It was a complete victory for the Titans, who were also the most consistent teams throughout the championship phase of the tournament.

Gill, who won his first IPL title with the Titans, was delighted after the momentous triumph and likened it to winning the World Cup. The former India U-19 star, who was part of the India U-19 team led by Prithvi Shaw that won the ICC U-19 World Cup in 2018, says winning an IPL trophy is like winning a Cup of the world.

“Obviously it (the title win) means a lot. After winning the U-19 World Cup, I think winning an IPL is as important as winning a World Cup,” Gill said speaking to Harsha Bhogle after the final.

“It’s my fifth year and I’m lucky to win the IPL this time. I wanted to be there until the end, and that’s what it was all about with the coaches, and I’m glad we got over the line our bowlers played really well to keep them down to 130 we thought at first that if we could get them under 150 that would be a good goal for us to pursue but luckily it was still under 150 and we got the job done for the team,” he added.

Gill was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad last year and was released by the franchise ahead of IPL 2022. Gill had joined KKR in 2018 and went four seasons without the franchise winning their first trophy. He was brought on as an opener for the GT and went on to be instrumental in their first title triumph this year.

Gill was consistent throughout the tournament and was able to step in when his team demanded it. He finished the tournament with 483 runs in 16 games with an average of over 34.50 and a strike rate of over 132. He was the second best run-getter for GT behind skipper Hardik that season.
