Airbnb calls them the 10 best summer travel destinations for 2022

Vacation planning has been a bit of a rollercoaster experience in recent years, as pandemic anxiety has continued to bring people closer to home, while pent-up wanderlust has enticed others to fly far, very far.

But a recent Airbnb survey found that 90% of its guests plan to travel this summer. Bookings for Airbnb digs abroad have returned to pre-pandemic levels. The popularity of “one-of-a-kind homes” – tiny houses, for example, barns and treehouses (!) – has skyrocketed. And several international destinations, starting with Venice and the Bahamas, have proven irresistible to vacationers considering summer plans.

Of course, these survey results aren’t for everyone — and the data diggers focused on Airbnb searches in Q1 2022, so there’s no data available for procrastinator demographics. (Or, as we prefer to be called, “spontaneous types.”)

But the 10 most popular international destinations among Airbnb bookings in the United States are centered on the beach, with eight of the vacation havens in places lapped by the sea. It’s also interesting how they cluster. Beachy or not, they’re all in Italy, the Caribbean, Mexico or Costa Rica. (We’re not sure what to make of that. No one goes to Barcelona – or Spain, to book a hotel?)

Here are Airbnb’s top 10 trending international destinations for summer, based on research from U.S. guests:

  1. Venice, Italy
  2. Nassau, Bahamas
  3. Capri, Italy
  4. Puerto Escondido, Mexico
  5. Tamarindo, Costa Rica
  6. Quepos, Costa Rica
  7. Florence, Italy
  8. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
  9. La Paz, Mexico
  10. Merida, Mexico
