A quarter of abortion clinics will close in the United States if Roe v Wade is cancelled: report

The Roe v Wade ruling controversy had been simmering in the United States for some time. Since the release of a leaked draft saying that the landmark judgment regarding women’s reproductive rights will be overturned, people have protested against it. Now, a study shows that the decision may lead to the closure of nearly a quarter of abortion clinics in the United States. The study, conducted by Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health, said more than a quarter of the country’s 790 abortion clinics – 202 clinics to be exact – will close in case Roe v Wade, which provides legal protection for abortion, would be reversed in the near future.

The study found that over the past two years, more clinics have opened in different states across the United States and although there have been closures, the number was not alarming in comparison.

However, if Roe v Wade is overturned, a dozen states will pass their own laws making abortion less accessible to the general public. Under the proposed laws, the restrictions will range from decreasing access to health care necessary for the abortion process to abortion homicide charges (as proposed by Kentucky lawmakers).

It will be a blow to the progress the United States has made in making abortion safe for the population, as clinics will disappear and abortion pills will be difficult for the public to access.

Currently, there is one clinic for 158,000 women of childbearing age, according to the report.
